Why did oil prices go up just because two United States Navy Ships bumped into each other?

This makes no sense to me at all. Friday, March 20, 2009, two U.S. Navy vesells colided and that sparked an increase in the price of oil. WHY???!!???

Oil traders, who control the price of oil by betting whether it will go up or down, tend to be timid greasy haired weenies with pocket protectors and birth control glasses who react to world news like the sweaty trigger finger of a heroin junkie jonesing for a fix while holding up a convenience store. If something happens that could restrict the supply of oil (like a pipeline breaks or gets sabotaged, for instance) they bet that the price will go up. The first guy to make that bet, if he's correct, stands to make a lot of money. So, they listen very closely to any news as it happens to determine if it could affect the supply or demand for oil.

The ships collided in the Strait of Hormuz which is a bottleneck for the oil that flows out of the Persian Gulf from countries such as Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. If one of the ships ran aground, or sank, that could concievably close the strait for at least several days, or even months. That would cause the price of oil to legitimately skyrocket because the world's supply has been cut.

When the news of a ship collision first comes out from a place like the Persian Gulf, you can't always take it at face value. You've certainly seen how the specific details of breaking news stories can change in the first minutes and hours immediately after the event. So, when the oil trading dweebs first heard the news, part of what went into their calculations went something like:

Maybe it wasn't just a simple ship collision. Maybe there was actually some kind of hostile military action that precipitated the event and we just haven't heard about it yet.

So, they're actually thinking that the first reports of a collision could actually indicate another war has started in the Gulf, which would cause oil to skyrocket as well - at least temporarily.

And these are only a couple of examples of what goes through the crowded caffeine warped minds of the oil trading nerds.

The bump in oil prices turned out to be minor because nothing catastrophic actually happened.
