Why am I allergic to stainless steel but not to surgical stainless steel?
I have wore many different metals when it comes to my piercing jewlerly, rings, necklaces, bracelets and have found out the only ones my body tolerates is surgical stainless steel and white/yellow gold.
Well doing some research I have found out white gold has nickel in it but I have never had a reaction to any of my white gold jewerly before. I wear it all day, every day. Also i'm not allergic to surgical stainless steel, but I am with stainless steel. Any ideas to why?
go to wikipedia, look up stainless steel ... it's interesting

How it's made - Stainless steel ( RO Sub )
The value of stainless steel
During the last century, stainless steel has emerged as the metal of choice for many applications. You'll find steel steel on top of skyscrapers in the sink and in your hands when using tools and objects. But stainless steel is really so great? How compared to other metals? Here is some basic information on stainless steel to review their effectiveness and popularity compared to other metals.
What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel can be defined as an alloy iron and carbon with chromium content from 10.5 to 11.5%. Smelting began working to form stainless steel in the 19th century, but It was not until the early 20th century that the production of stainless steel has become massive and widely used. The chromium content is the secret of resistance to stains. When the chromium comes in contact with oxygen, creating a coating film called chromium oxide and steel supply a kind of barrier against corrosion. Whenever the chromium oxide layer is broken, "self-healing" and continue to create another film exposed chromium interacts with oxygen.
Can rust stainless steel?
Yes, it is important to note that while as stainless steel firmly oppose any form of corrosion is not completely immune to corrosion and rust. While gold and platinum are completely insensitive to corrosion, Stainless steel is the cheapest option for many applications. The best way to prevent stainless steel from oxidation and corrosion is cleaned. When kept clean, the steel can withstand a variety of environments and contact, and chemicals. Abrasive materials may break the ability of stainless steel to resist corrosion. Always clean a stainless steel component, do not use abrasive materials or brushes. soft tissue and various types of soap is recommended every time does not contain chlorine.
Stainless steel grades
The most common categories are 304 (18% chromium, 8% nickel) and 316 (16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. Steel Grade 304 is the most versatile and widely used steel. Originally called 18-8 due to chromium and nickel. Grade 316 has a corrosion resistance and is often referred to as the Sea of quality stainless steel and is used in food premises and laboratory equipment, medical devices, threaded inserts, and marine applications. Grade 302 has been replaced because of the availability and price of 304, but is still in items such as washers and springs.
What was used?
Stainless steel is perhaps one of the most widely used metals in the world today. You can find stainless steel in everything from buildings, watches, monuments to skate blades. In 1930, the Chrysler Building in New York was constructed and covered with 302 stainless steel quality. A recent inspection of the building attests to the durability of stainless steel and its resistance to the elements and no corrosion or loss of thickness was found. The St. Louis Arch is the largest man-made monument United States. The concrete arch is covered nine thousand tons of stainless steel from top to bottom. [3] Since 1965 when the arc is over, cleanup is the only maintenance of the 603-foot monument was needed.
While the average person can not always make contact with these monumental structures, most people interact with products of stainless steel every day. Many appliances cabinets sinks to dishwashers stainless steel. This metal is often chosen in the kitchen because of its durability and aesthetic ground with the cleaning, the opportunity to maintain its appearance.
Stainless steel is not only good for aesthetics, but many tools are stainless steel. Because of the strength and durability of metal, owners and businesses have chosen to incorporate stainless steel tools. One company even said, "Replacing carbon stainless steel tools Tools eliminates this risk and should be considered standard procedure for all modern facilities. [4] The high-risk tasks need tools Reliable does not corrode or break during use. Nobody likes to find a rusted tool when necessary for a particular job in home, and owners can not afford to constantly buy replacement tools.
Stainless steel hardware on the user benefits all the above qualities of stainless steel. Today These days you can find nuts fixing stainless steel base, bolts, screws and chain. You also find accessories very specialized and complex equipment used for handling and marine applications.
What Is there any other metals?
One of the most common elements in the universe is iron. Because of its abundance and accessibility relatively easy, the iron was a popular metal for tools and other objects for millennia. Cast Iron is used to make bicycles, machines and equipment. However, ferrous metals and can break easily susceptible to rust. Oxidation is performed whenever materials of iron contact with oxygen and water (moisture). Because of this responsibility, rusty iron loses integrity and can be dangerous in situations criticism.
Nickel is a metal commonly used as an alloy. Even the nickel coin is that the copper of 75%. Nickel is commonly used as a cast metal or stainless steel. However, nickel is rarely used as the metal itself.
As indicated above, Titanium is recognized as one of the only elements of nature that is itself completely resistant to rust. Titanium is resistant to light, durable and tooth. However, all these qualities, titanium must be refined and are not normally produced in large quantities. This translates into higher prices. Normally, will be included in the titanium alloy, such as stainless steel or aluminum. Sometimes they appear in watches or wedding rings, but again, only in small quantities due to supply and costs.
Zinc is another metal such as nickel, which is best applied in alloys. Often used to coat other metals for corrosion resistance. Architects increasingly use this material for UV resistance, natural tones and corrosion resistance.
One of the most common metals and aluminum is cheaper. When in its pure form, the metal is relatively weak and easily influenced, but united in other metals in alloys is much higher. If aluminum is used for critical applications, appears as an alloy. Because this material is so light and cheap, the larger objects (cars, aircraft) that require a large integrated aluminum metal as an alloying element.
These (and a few others) have their advantages. Rarely one of these materials are a unique item for themselves. Normally, objects are of a composition or an alloy of several of these metals. Although stainless steel is still consisting of iron, carbon and chromium, which may result from such other metals as well. All things considered, it should be noted that stainless steel, as such, is a metal superior in many respects. It is extremely strong, stain resistant, and may be fashionable to respond to many different applications.
Although titanium and gold may be stronger and more durable, cost make it a practical material for articles Stainless steel, when you can do the job very efficiently and at lower cost. The growing popularity of stainless steel for the last century does not happen by accident. If you plan to buy a tool, appliance and construction of a national monument, use the higher grades stainless steel. Without any doubt, worth the extra cost stainless for years of durable service returns in whatever form it is used.
